The Nepali movie industry has come a long way since the first ever Satya Harischandra. Be the stories, music, dialogues, direction, action, costumes or any other elements, the Nepali movies have raised the bar time and again. Today the Nepali film industry has been successful in attracting mass Nepali crowds to the theaters and also provide them entertainment at home through cable, DVDs or online.
The year 2010 has been good for the Nepali film industry; many new films have been produced and released up till now. The year is yet to be over so it is safe to predict that the industry is going to earn a good profit. There a lot of movies that released in the year 2010. The most famous and the popular movie released in this year were Kusume Rumal. It starred Ritu bhattarai, Niraj Baral, Usha Rajak, Nir Shah, Tripti Nadkar, Laxmi Giri etc. the movie Mero Euta Sathi Cha was another movie that was able to capture a lot of attention this year. Directed by sudarshan Thapa it had Namrata shrestha and Aryan Sigdel as its lead. Jivan Luitel, Keshab Bhattarai, ashok Sharma, BS Rana were the other cast members.
Films based on traditional matters and those made differently have all done well in the market. Take Nai Nabhannu La for example it is a triangular love story with a few new presentations; this film did well in the market. Similarly Simosh Sunuwar’s First Love, which does not have a new story is being called a big hit of this year after being well received by the young urban audience. There have also been films made in other languages that have done well in the market. It is important to mention that films made on different topics like Dus Gaja and Das Dhunga are being termed a must watch.
Some of the other movies that were released this year were Kanun, Ma timi bina marihalchu ni, Kasle chhyo mero mann, Kohi Mero, Waha Bhudi Ra Loktantra etc. all in all there were more than 50 releases this year.
The movie Kanun which was the movie starring superstar Rajesh Hamal, Nikhil Upreti, Dilip Rayamajhi, Jharana Thapa, Arunima Lamsal, Sunil Thapa and Dinesh sharma.
Alok Nembang is back with another promising movie Kohi Mero. This movie is going to be a comeback for the stunning and sexy Jharana Bajracharya after a long gap. It also starred Aryan Sigdel, Sanchita Luitel and has a debutant actor Subash Thapa. Kasle Chhoyo Mero Mann is another latest movie in town. Similarly there is the comedy movie Waha Bhudi Ra Loktantra.
Like mentioned previously, some of the movies this year had nothing new to offer. They all had the similar story line from the past. Even when they had a new story, it was quite insensible to say the least. The monotony of the story and its nonsense didn’t get them much audience. This shows how weak and amateur the Nepali film industry still is. After more than 50years, the Nepali film industry hasn’t been able to prove it worth while.
In comparison to the earlier stage of the Nepali film fraternity, there has been more degradation than progress. The industry has a lot to think about and a whole lot more to work on. It isn’t the quantity that matters it is the quality that is produced that counts. The earlier days of film industry didn’t see many numbers of movies but they were really good in what they were. Today, we see hundreds of releases a year, but the quality they have is zero. It is a shame for the Nepali film industry. We need results, good results which the Nepali Film Fraternity seems to have none.
Many new directors and actors have also appeared on screen this year especially female actors. This is a good year to start your film career as well as many new comers have been given the chance to act and showcase their talent. Not only have that but singers and music directors like Anju Pant and Satya and Swaroop Raj Acharya have had a successful musical venture for the silver screen.
Some Nepali movies in 2010 have proved that no matter what if you are willing to make a difference then any year is suitable to start working on it.There is an indication that new talent be it in the form of actors, singers, musicians, directors or writers are budding and ready to take on the challenge of attracting audience from all walks of life. This is important for the development of the Nepali film industry and making a mark in the world film platform.
In the name of creating and making something different if we forget what makes us different as Nepalis then the movies will be lost in the pool of hundreds of such different films. The year 2010 needs to be used as a lesson to be learnt in the movie industry; it should be seen as an inspiration and also a task that needs constant work. If the filmmakers are going to take in more for next year then 2010 is the right year to look for an example. It is not wrong to hope that for many years to come 2010 will be the inspiration to make movies of all kinds to experiment with subject matters have soothing songs and gain as much audience as possible.
