Movies are definitely the most preferred entertainment medium in the world. Movies from all around the world have been entertaining us. Among them the English and the Indian movies have given us entertainment par excellence. But like the Indian and English film fraternity has aroused the Nepali Industry known as Kollywood. Nepali film industry is just a few decades old. The history of Nepali movies starts from the first ever Nepali language film Satya Harischandra. It was a movie by D.B. Pariyar. It was produced from India, and was released on September 14, 1951. Then, came the first ever Nepali produced movie “Aamaâ€, released on October 7, 1964. This movie was directed by Hira Singh Khatri and was produced by the Information Department of His Majesty’s government of Nepal; now Government of Nepal.
In the year 1966, a movie was produced under a private banner, Sumonjali films Pvt. Ltd. The movie was Maitighar. Although it was a Nepali movie, it had many Indian contributors, including the actors and singers. This movie also made a way for Nepali musicians and singers such as Narayan Gopal, Aruna Lama, Prem Dhoj Pradhan and C.P Lohani. Later in 1971, the government established the Royal Nepal film corporation. Mann Ko Bandh was the first Nepali film produced by this corporation. Kumari was the first ever color Nepali movie. Many other successful movies such as Sindoor and Jeevan Rekha tagged along later.
During the hay days of the Nepali movie industry, there weren’t many movies that released. In contradiction to the demand, the Nepali movie fraternity could not deliver many movies. The reason for it was the lack of investment from the private sectors. The Royal Nepal Film Corporation made and produced about one movie in every three years or so. Also, these rate productions were played only to a limited crowd. At this speed of production and the very few circulations, the film industry wasn’t witnessing much success.
But in the mid 80s many private investors started to make investments in Nepali movies. Filmmakers like Tulsi Ghimire, Shambhu Pradhan were the founders of the Nepali film trend. Even prominent actors like Ashok Sharma moved to production and direction of the Nepali movies. Soon, the rate of movie production in Nepal increased. By the year 1999 the Nepali Movie Industry was putting out more than 20 films at a steady rate every year. Today, the Nepali film industry has come a long way. Regarding technology, actors, directors or the music sector, Nepali movies have progressed.
The first ever Lux film Awards is one of the greatest landmarks Nepali Movie Industry has achieved. This is the kind of support and affirmation our film requires. But still it isn’t enough to be recognized in the world film carnival. the skills and art needs to be more polished. The film fraternity lacks a lot of discipline and respect to their work. Until further improvements done, the hope for international recognition is still very far. We still have a lot to do and much more to see. We have lots to achieve. Like Robert Frost said Miles to go, before I sleep, we still have a lot to improve to be world renowned.
But the Nepali movie industry had a downfall after the Maoist revolution. Just as happens with every revolution, the movie industry suffered a lot. The actors and singers left the country as no new movies were being produced. But after the end of the revolution, that is, by 2006 things started returning back to their normal state and movie production began again. There was an increase in the number of movies produced and also in the audience. New Nepali movies have a much greater acclaim than the old ones due to an all-round increase of the business in the Nepali movie industry.
