Nikhil Upreti is one of the leading actor of the Nepali movie industry. He is popular for his magnificent stunts and action in the industry. Born in Piprabhitta, Sarlahi, he had interest in actions from his childhood. With a lot of experience in the world of movie he had his first movie ‘Pinjada’ in 2057. The stunt where he jumped from the seven storeys building in ‘pinjada’ was significant for his career.

Born to Mr. Govinda Upreti and Mrs. Bhoj Kumari Upreti Nikhil Upreti completed his formal education from Birjung and Kathmandu and later he joined acting class in India. He got diploma in acting from Roshan Taneja’s studio. Along with his studies he used to teach for the action plays. This lucky guy got a chance to work as an assistant fight director in ABCL Company of Amitabh Bachhan.

After 8 years of love he married to Kopila Upreti of Noubise, Dhadhing in 2058. they have children together. He once quoted that ‘behind every successful man there is a women’. His marriage is a living proof to what he said. However, it was once rumoured that he was married to the beautiful actress Sanchita Luitel. They were linked together by many but no one has made any claims. It could just be another popularity stunts for TRP, which is common in the business of entertainment.

Till now he has worked in more than 45 films with a lead role. Films like Maya ko Jaal, Santan, Kartabya, Shivaratri, Ram Laxman, Bhai Bhai etc. were his hit films. He then won best actor award in First National Films Award 2062 B.S. from the movie Haami Teen Bhai. After one year he was again awarded with Rastriya Nagarik Sworna Samman. He has also signed three Bhojpuri film from the Indian film makers.

Upreti is not only a brilliant actor but is also an emerging producer. He worked as a producer in a movie called ‘Savadhan’ which is a completely different movie. Like many of his other movies this was also a smash hit. In addition he has also worked as an Ad director for 2 PM noodles and is also a brand ambassador of Phataaphat noodles. Many actors have come and gone but Nikhil is here to stay. Spectacular, fantastic and a real hero, Nikhil has set a trend of actions and stunts in the Nepali movies. We are waiting for his upcoming movies and hope to see a lot more of him.

He started his film career as a side dancer, and then a choreographer; he is one of the few actors, who are a good dancer as well. He is Dilip Rayamajhi, who shot to fame and recognition after playing the role of Adi Kabi Bhanubhakta, the first poet to write in Nepali language for the mass. His debut movie was Bhanubhakta, for which he received great praise and critical acclaim. After that he got to act in many movies, including Tulsi Ghimrie’s Darpan Chaya. One of the biggest hits of the entire Nepali film history, Dilip gained much popularity after the screening of the movie. He became the heart throb of the Nepali girls and women, alike.
Many school girls to working women, became his fan after watching this movie. His chemistry with Niruta Singh was commendable in the movie, and they were paired again in some movies, one of which is Lahana. The last scene of the movie, in which Niruta Singh dies and the two actors, in particular Dilip cries, had girls tearing up to see their favorite hero in pain.
However, the duo could not revive their chemistry with same enthusiasm, and the audience could not feel their on screen chemistry, either. It is a sad thing that a pair, with so much potential to become the next big pair of Nepali films could not work their magic, accordingly. It may partly be the fault of the directors who cast them; they could not manipulate them to produce the same effect as Darpan Chaya.
Nonetheless, Dilip has worked with Karishma Manandhar, who is probably five to six years older than him. His chemistry with her was well received too, especially in the movie, Jindagani. The song, “Tiomro tyo aankhama ko bascha…” from the same movie featuring Dilip and Karishma, became popular among music lovers. He related in an interview that he went to see Manandhar’s shooting when he was a school kid, and said that he was glad to be working with a senior artist.
Dilip has also worked in several music videos, whether pop music, or folk music. The latest of his music videos are to the songs, “Yani maya ho…” and a Teej song, “Markai deu kammara, bhachana na kammara, shaili…” His dancing has been praised by many people, and in many people’s opinion, his dancing is better than his acting. There is one thing about Rayamajhi that people have no problem with, and that is his openness about his family life. He talked about his wife in his interviews and still does, without revealing too much, but he also does not hide that he is married, which is not characteristic of many other actors.

It would be a crime to separate the two, not only in person, but even when mentioning about them. They are made for each other; they were born to act together, whether in movies, or in their favorite genre of TV serials. Who else would I be talking about, than the MAHA jodi. Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya are the biggest actors in the field of, mainly comedy. Even after decades of their working together in hundreds of TV serials, stand up comedy, movies and stage shows, they have not found a successor to their fame and name in the comedy genre. This is good for them and better for their audience, who absolutely adore their pair.
Even though I do not want to commit a crime by separating them, for a little background it would be inevitable to write about them individually. Madan Krishna is the older brother, among the two; he was born in 1950 and is nine years older than Hari Bansha. He started playing in street dramas and had done some other acting, before meeting up with Hari Bansha Acharya. Acharya had performed in Radio Nepal and in the Gaijatra Mahotsav before getting together with Madan Krishna.
Though the two had worked independent of each other for some years, it was only with the two working together that they gained, the popularity and acclaim as of now. People cannot even remember a time, when they had seen them separately. The movies that the two have acted together in are: Lovi Paapi, Filim, Basudev, Tan Ta Sarai Bigrish Ni Badri, Je Bho Ramrai Bho and Balidan.
The two have done comedy acts in other movies, while Filim and Balidan saw them in serious role. Especially in Balidan, Hari Bahnsas Acharya proved his variety and scope as an actor, who can not only do comedy, but make people tear up as well.
The two are better known for their acting in TV serials, as mentioned earlier. They have done more than thirty serials till date, the latest being Pathsaala, which is being aired on Nepal Television, every Tuesday night. Some of tehri most famous TV serials are: 50-50, Lal Purja, Laxmi, Ban Pale, Raat, Kantipur, Pandhra Gate, Madan Bahadur Hari Bahadur, Sur Besur, Dashain and Aama. In most of these serials, Hari Bansha has played the negative role, except for Lal Purja and Dashain, in which Madan Krishna has played the unpopular role, especially in Lal Purja, which is a role to remember for a lifetime. There is not much to say about the versatility of Hari Bansha; he has been the perfect innocent guy in Lal Purja, while he has played a true sadist in Laxmi and Madan Bahadur Hari Bahadur. I hope that the two have many more roles to play for the Nepali audience, at home and abroad.

The bindaas (coolest) actor of Nepali movies, can you guess who he is? No he is not Bhuwan K.C., not Rajesh Hamal either, definitely not Dilip Rayamajhi, nor is he Aryan Sigdel. If you go back to the early years of Nepali movies, you will find the answer to this question. I cannot linger any longer; it is none other than, the handsome, dashing and one of the first celebrities of Nepali films, Shiva Shrestha.
There is no denying to the fact that he is the coolest superstar, and that he is down- to-earth and straightforward person. His personality is such that his acting gets influenced by his true nature, and the performance on screen seems more than just an act. Bhuwan K.C may be the romantic hero of his generation and Rajesh Hamal, the biggest celebrity of Nepali cinema; it is Shiva Shrestha, who rules the heart of any Nepali movie lover. This is proven by the fact that he has one of the biggest fan followings among other Nepali actors, and can even compare to the Bollywood actors. If you have watched any of his movies, you will be able to tell, why he is the persona that he is. And if you haven’t watched a movie by Shiva Shrestha, then you have not done justice to your movie sense.
He has the ability to dance (an attribute in itself), to act, to please his audience, to do action scenes, to make people laugh; in other words, he has got it all. He started his movie career in 1980, with Prakahs Thapa’s Jeevan Rekha. He has worked with many actresses, including Kristi Mainali, Sharmila Malla, Karishma Manandhar, Niruta Singh, Jal Shah, Bipana Thapa, and others.
He did not have a fixed pair of an actress that he worked with, unlike Rajesh and Bhuwan, which may be because of his ability to do action, rather than be romantic. However, it is not to say that he is a bad romantic actor, he just does action better. Some of his very famous movies include: Chino, Kanchi, Thuldai, Sagun, Mamaghar, Sapana, and many more. It is a must to include that he is an amazing dancer; there is no one who can equal him in dancing. Some of his songs that have gained much popularity, due to his dancing are: “Mohani Laagla hai,” “Batasale udai lagyo maya mero,” “Sundariko mannma basne ko hola,” “Mugling jahresi,” “ghumna ghumna jaun ghumna dhulikhel,” and more. It has been a journey of thirty years for Shrestha in Nepali movies; however he has been loved, as he has been on the screen for hundred years. It will also be laudable to mention that he has worked in many Pakistani movies, as well.

The first official ‘chocolate hero’ of Nepali silver screen, Bhuvan K.C. ruled the hearts of women in the 1980s and the 1990s. He still is a much handsome actor; however with the advent of new actors in the film industry, he has had to side step. He started his career in Nepali movies, from Sambhu Pradhan’s Samjhana, which was released in 1983. His co-star in the movie was Tripti Naadkar, who played a double role of the wife and the daughter of K.C. His pairing with Tripti Nadakar is considered to be one of the best in Nepali movies. They have worked in several movies together, including Tulsi Ghimire’s Kusume Rumal and the movie in which Denny Dengzompa has acted, Saino.
Because of their on screen chemistry, and the ease with which they worked together, they are called the golden couple of Nepali silver screen. K.C. has also worked with other leading actresses of his time, namely Maushami Malla, Sahrmila Malla, Gauri Malla, Kristi Mainali, Niruta Singh and Karishma Manadhar, excluding some of the other actresses. His on screen chemistry with almost all the actresses is fabulous; this has led to K.C. being called a romantic hero.
His other on screen pair is his own wife, Sushmita K.C., with whom he has worked in movies, like Nepali Babu, Crorepati, Tan ta sarai nai bigrish ni Badri and the recent, Ma Timi Bina Marihalchu. Some of the other movies of K.C., which earned him name and fame, are: Tilhari, Kanyadan, Chino, Dakshina, Superstar, among others. After nearly three decades of starting his career, he is still loved by his fans. He gets to travel the world, because he is renowned, as a Nepali film actor. Nepalis living in other places, too, give him the respect of a senior actor. It is also commendable to mention that he has contributed to the Nepali movies, not only through his acting, but also as a producer.
Some of the films that he has produced, along with Sushmita K.C. are: Nepali Babu, Crorepati, Ma Timi Bina Marihalchu. All of these movies did very well in the market, which shows that the business sense of the actor is keen. He has not tried his hands in direction, but the idea cannot be dismissed, as he can be quite un-predictable. When people were thinking that he was no longer the ‘superstar,’ his movie, Ma Timi Bina Marihalchu, which released in 2009, became a super hit. Following his example, his son, Anmol K.C. is all set to follow his steps and try his luck in the Nepali film industry. A tit bit about Bhuvan is that he has also given his voice to a few songs, one of which is a dohori song. Similarly, he is also known as the ‘Dingo boot’ actor, as boots have been his fetish, right from Kusume Rumal to his latest film.

Rajesh Hamal is the only Super star in Nepali film industry. He is considered as a superstar because of his stardom. Every movie he features in becomes a sure hit and rates the box office. He is not only a veteran actor but is probably one of the most educated actors in the Nepali film industry. He is known for is good behaviour and a stylish personality. The name, Rajesh Hamal is enough to excite the concerns and the interests of Nepali movie viewers. As an old saying goes, whether you love him or hate him, you cannot ignore him. He is the longest standing superstar of his generation, and among the three actors, who are regarded as the better of the best; the other two being, Shiva Shrestha and Bhuwan K.C.
It is my pleasure to write about him, because there is no denying that he is my favorite Nepali actor. Some people are born superstars, and some have to work hard to achieve that status. Rajesh Hamal is an exception, in that, he was born a superstar and with his hard work, he has maintained his position in the Nepali film industry. It is not my love for the actor that I mention this, but even people, who do not think that he is a good enough actor, agree that he has an aura that is undeniable. Many people are impressed with his personality; he is well spoken, kind, and social minded. On top of that he is also well educated; he is one of the very few actors in Nepal, who have completed a Masters degree. He has a Masters degree in English Literature from the Punjab University, India. This adds to the conception that he is an extraordinary actor, with good knowledge of the world.
Rajesh Hamal was born on June 9, 1964 in Tansen, Nepal. He studied at St. Xavier’s School till the eighth grade. He partly went to college in Moscow and finished his M.A. in English from Punjab University, India. Even though he has Masters in English, he hardly or reclines from talking in English preferring his native tongue Nepali, during his interviews. His first movie was “Yug Dekhi Yug Samma” in 1990, a film made by his uncle. Till date he has worked in over 177 Nepali films and one Pakistani movie.
The movie “Deuta” in the year 1994 was Hamal’s ticket to super stardom. Since then he has never looked back.Hamal started his film career with Deepak Rayamajhi’s Yug Dekhi Yug Samma in 1994. His pair in the movie was Kristi Mainali, with whom he has worked in many films. Similarly, in the later years his pairing with Karishma Manandhar and Niruta Singh has received great response from the audience. Allare, Basanti and Saathi with Karishma Manandhar were great hits for Hamal, and Siundo ko Sindoor and Kartavya are his films with Niruta Singh.

It is essential to mention that Hamal has been a favorite of movie makers, ever since he started his career. There are a very few films without him in the movie, somewhere and sometime, even if it is just a cameo. He is sellable, which is one of the reasons, why film directors and producers want him in a movie. However, it has been sixteen years of film history for Hamal, and he is still going strong. Some of his new ventures are Dus Gaja and Dharma; there has been a surge of new actors in Nepali films, but Hamal is still the biggest Superstar. Not only am I saying this, but you can read his interviews and see him on television quite often, which proves his persona and charm. Born in 1964, the actor is nearly fifty years old, but when he is on the screen, all eyes are on him.

Rajesh Hamal is always asked about his marriage plans and as a smooth talker as he is he always answers that he doesn’t feel that he is in a marriageable age. He feels quite comfortable being single, he says and well, we believe him. He may be ageing but with the charm he has, he is doing a lot of girls a favour by staying single. However, a big part of him being single can be his long past relation. He fell in love when he was 17 with a 22 years old Indian girl. The serious relation lasted for three years. Later, her parents married her off to someone else. And the gentleman he is, he still doesn’t mention his ex-girlfriend as he thinks that he would be shaming her by reminiscing about their past affair. He sure is a man in true words.

Rajesh Hamal has been the critique’s favourite for not changing his looks as for the need of his character. He even played the character of a police officer with long hairs. His long hair is his unique trademark, and no matter what the character demands, people love him in his long hair. He is obviously one of the most popular and loved actor in the Nepali film fraternity. He is a hit in himself, a brand name. Thus, every movie he plays is definite to hit the charts and become a hit.

Some of his prominent works include, Sadak, Basanti, Siudo ko Sindoor, Aprad, Kasam, Dhukdhuki, Khandan, Aashirbad, Maili, Sathi, Jeevan Sangarsha etc. The list goes on and on. The star he is, there is no ending to the list of movies he has done. After so many years of working as an actor in this industry, he is planning to do some multitasking. He is planning to get into the movie-making business in dual roles as director and Actor. After all the love and knowledge he has gained from the fraternity, it is his duty to give something back as well. We hope that he proves to be as much good a director as he has been an actor. It is for sure that many will be waiting eagerly for his movie as a debutant director.

New Actress

There have always been good looking and presentable actresses in Nepali movies. Whether they have stayed for a long time, or have disappeared after a movie, actresses have played an important role in the popularity of Nepali movies, among the large mass of viewers. There was a time when actresses were limited to dancing and lip-syncing on screen; times have changed now, as female actors are getting main roles in the movies.

Tripti Nadakar, Mala Sinha, Gauri Malla were the very first actresses of Nepal. They are the veteran female actors and have entertained us with many movies. Then came Karishma Manandhar, Niruta Singh, Bipana Thapa, Rekha thapa and others, who among the most popular actresses in the history of Nepali Movie industry. Perhaps they are the most consistent actresses comparing to those who came and went. But now is the era of the new generation. Whole new, fresh, talented actresses have entered the block and it seems like they are here to stay. After Karishma Manadhar, Gauri Malla, Niruta Singh, Nepali movies have earned faces like Yuna Upreti, Nandita K.C, Namrata Shrestha, Diya Maskey, Nisha Poudel and others.

Yuna Upreti came in to the movies, along with Raj Ballav Koirala in Parkhi Basen in 2008. Her role as a blind girl in this movie was applauded; she was commendable in the movie. Before coming in the movie industry, she had worked as a model. Among her other movies are: Flash Back, Pahilo Pahilo Maya.
Namarata Shrestha was cast in Alok Nembang’s Sano Sansar in 2008. A popular face in music videos and advertisements, namarata is also a model and a radio jockey. Her next film was Sudarsan Thapa’s Mero Euta Sathi Cha. Both these movies gained her popularity and praise from others. She has also acted in a short TV film based on HIV AIDS awareness.

Nisha Adhikari a model, video jockey for Kantipur Television, and music video actress started her career with Simosh Sunuwar’s Mission Paisa. She has also won the title of Miss International Nepal in 2005. Her next venture was the movie, First Love. Even in this short period of her career, she is a household name. This popularity is increasing by the day, as she was also a guest judge in Miss Nepal 2010.

Diya Maskey, a theater actress, music video actress and a model has tried her luck in the Nepali silver screen with Kagbeni. Diya also acted in a social television drama Dalan, which was based on caste system and its negative aspects. Her acting skills have been praised by the audience and the film critics, alike. Though, she has not worked in many films, she is a talented and a gifted actress.

Unlike these other actresses, Nadita K.C has worked in several movies till date. Her first movie was Yo Kasto Maya in 2060 B.S. She has even worked with Rajesh Hamal in The Yug Dekhi Yug Samma. She has acted in movies, like Hami Teen Bhai, Karmako Fal, Bharosha, Naya Nepal, Jyanmara, Trishul, Bashanta Ritu. She has also featured in music videos and Nepali television dramas.
These new Nepali actress are winning hearts of Nepali audiences, with their acting skills performance and screen presence. If Nepali movies can be about the role of women in society and their potential, rather than family dramas, the industry can attract numerous other young women.

New Actors

For the last few decades we have been seeing the same old faces in the Nepali movies. Actors like Rajesh Hamal, Bhuwan K.C, Hari Bhansha Acharya, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Shiv Shrestha, Dilip Rayamajhi are veteran actors. They have been in this industry for decades now. For years we have been thinking that the youths have no interest in the Nepali Cinema, or that the actors listed above are the dominant figure of the Nepali big screens, until now.

In a last few years, many new faces have come to light in the Nepali movie industry. They are fresh, highly talented and have everything that the Nepali screen has been longing for. Some new and refreshing talents to hit the silver screens are Karma Shakya, Aryan Sigdel, Vinay shrestha, Saugat Malla, Raj Ballav Koirala, Jivan Luitel and others. They are extremely talented, young and are different than what the Nepali Films have been offering the audience for years. Looks like the era of the once dominant actors like Bhuwan K.C and shiv shrestha has come to an end.

Raj Ballav Koirala is one of the most promising new actors in the Nepali Cinema. He is a model turned actor. He tried his acting skills in many music videos. One of the videos that showcased his talent was Karna Das’s “bhetiyera chutnu bhanda…” His first movie was “Parkhi Basen” released in 2008. It was a super hit and he won KTV Film Awards Best Debut Actor (Male). He also worked in Deewanapan, Samjhana, Guru Dakshina, Chadi Gaye Paap Lagla apart from his debut movie.

Aryan Sigdel is another budding actor who has taken the Nepali film industry by storm with his charm. His adorable look and personality has made him famous among the ladies. He has earned a “chocolate hero” status from the critics. He debuted in Rekha Thapa’s Kismat and thereafter hasn’t had to look back. He has only stridden forward with movies like Mausam, Mero Euta Saathi Cha, The Flashback, Kohi Mero and First Love. Before starring in movies, he acted in small screen. He is remembered for his performances in Houseful and Gharbeti Ba.

Mr. Nepal Jivan Luitel 2002, Karma Shakya a.k.a Mahesh Shakya and Saugat Malla are the other budding talents on the silver screen. Jivan started his career from the movie Sano Sansar as a supporting actor. He is a very handsome man, no wonder he is the former Mr. Nepal. He has worked in other movies like Tirkha, Mero Euta Saathi Cha, Naseeb Aafno, Deep Shikha, Kasam Hajurko and Malai Mann Paryo. His latest hit was Nai Nabhannu La. Karma and Saugat are on the other hand talented theatre actors. Karma started off with Sano Sansar which was a big hit among the youth. His other movie is First Love. Although he hasn’t worked in many movies, he has shown his worth in the ones he is involved.

Saugat Malla is also a theatre actor. He debuted in Kagbeni and ahs worked in Das Dhunga as well. Both the actors have gained a lot of popularity for their work in such a short span of time and have also got a lot of critical acclaim. Another aspiring actor is the singer turned actor, Nima Rumba. He was well received for his work in Kagbeni and the audience is expecting a lot more from him. The talented singer that he already is, we hope that he proves to be as good an actor as well.

With these really talented and good looking new actors, the horizon of Nepali cinema looks bright and simmering. It is definitely an encouragement for the youths to imply their talent in this industry. Moreover, with new actors in the block, a lot of youths are attracted to go watch Nepali movies too. With their work and popularity, the future of Nepali Film industry is anything but dull.
