let us look at the evergreen Nepali movies of all time, If you love Nepali movie then they are a must watch. Based on various factors, Kusume Rumal, Balidan, Basudev, Prem Pinda and Darpan Chaaya are the movies that have been very much liked by Nepali movie lovers.
First, Kusume Rumal, directed by Tulsi Ghimire is a triangular love story. The film has Bhuwan K.C., Tripti Naadkar and Udit Narayan Jha playing the lead roles. The film does not have a new plotline but it does have innocence to it. The music of the film is absolutely beautiful with the music composition by Ranjit Gajmer.
Balidan is also directed by Tulsi Ghimire and is one of the few off beat movies in the history of Nepali cinema. The movie portrays the troubles of a highly ethical man played by Harihar Sharma who is in conflict with his immoral friend acted by Neer Shah. The movie also has great songs and is one of the more realistic movies made in Nepal.
Prem Pinda is directed by Yadav Kharel, and portrays the aristocratic life in Nepal during the Rana regime. The movie has Neer Shah, Saroj Khanal and Soni Rauniyar in the main leads. The movie is a different take on eternal love, and love in general.
Darpan Chaya, once again directed by Tulsi Ghimire is a triangular love cum friendship story. Dilip Rayamajhi, Niruta Singh and Uttam Pradhan are the leading actors of the movie. The movie explores love and life on the verge of death due to a chronic illness. All these movies are worth a watch, and in fact many of these movies may be a privilege to watch.
What does a film maker expect from a film? Most film makers expect their films to be loved and adored by the public, they are not as interested in the critical acclaim. The reason is that if the public likes a film, then it is sure to earn a lot. For a film maker, a film earning profit is a return for an investment, and that is only possible if the film is loved by all. It is an irony that though film makers do not want to hear about the bad reviews, they love the good ones. Critical reviews of movies encourage people to visit cinema halls, and make a movie super hit. A film that garners revenue, as well as screens for a long time in a cinema hall is considered hit.

Especially, for a small movie industry like Nepal’s, young women can make a place for themselves in the movies. However, this does not translate to success for each and everyone. Good looks and great physique are not enough to last long in this industry, you do need the talent. No matter how clichéd it sounds, until and unless one has the talent and actress cannot stay long in the movies. This is the reason, why most actresses want to prove their worth and do roles that are weighty.
I have made a list of top ten actresses of Nepali movies, which is obviously an objective view.
Not only that, but all these actresses happen to have high intellectual abilities, which is most essential in any person. There are many other actresses, who did not make into the top ten, but surely deserve the status.
Like directors and producers, actors have a significant role to play in the making and the screening of a movie. This is evident in the fact that most directors and producers go to great lengths to find a suitable actor for their film. After all, it is the actors that audiences view in the movie, and not producers or directors. On top of that, a male protagonist has an incredible charm for, both the male and female viewers. Mostly, the male audience looks at the strength and the character of the actors, while the female audience focuses on the looks and the acting. It is hard to be an actor, especially a Nepali actor with so many prying eyes on them.
There have been and are fine actors in the Nepali film industry of which I have come up with the list of top ten actors of Nepali movies. This list includes not only the main leads, but also the character actors.
There are many actors of the yesteryears and of today, who equally deserve a place on the list. And, it is a good sign that Nepali movies have so many talented actors to boast of.
Most film producers in Nepal are either established or are new in the field . If a film does well then it is all well for the producer and the entire team. If it does not then the burden falls on the producer.
Those who have stood the test of time have done great projects with incredible directors. Of the many movie producers in Nepal, I have tentatively come up with top ten producers of Nepali movie. The bases of ranking are the number of movies made, and the success.
Ujjwal Ghimire is another of the popular producers of the recent times with films like Biswas and Jindagani to his name.
There is no denying Yadav Kahrel deserves a place in top ten nepali movie producer with movies like Prem Pinda, Bhanu Bhakta and Shree Swasthani to his production.
Movie directors are like the creators; they can either make or destroy a movie with their creation. They initiate the project, direct the actors/actresses to act accordingly and try to maintain the flow of a movie. Though it is the actors and actresses who enjoy a celebrity status in society, it is the directors that are pivotal to any film. It would be wise to mention that Nepali movie industry has been blessed with numerous talented directors who have made a niche for themselves. Some have been financially successful while some have garnered more critical acclaim. Without such directors, it would have been and still would be hard to convince people to watch Nepali movies, rather than Hindi and American movies.
In terms of the number of movies they have made, and their success in any form, I have come up with top ten directors of Nepali movies.

Nepali music is a word that is too small to describe a field that is as vast and as diverse as the vegetation around the forests of Nepal. When somebody asks me what Nepali music is I have no definitive answer. I feel awkward saying anything that does not define Nepali music as a whole. Nonetheless whenever I feel like distinguishing Nepali music from other music around the world, I give examples of the various folk music of the country. It is an incredible gift we have; the gift of folk music so distinct and yet so friendly that anyone can tap their feet and move their hands according to its beats.
Despite the popularity of pop, rock, retro, reggae, rap, hip hop and all sorts of popular music, it is folk music that is the soul of the people. Even in the United States, where many different kinds of music have evolved, they have the soul music of the African Americans, which is a mixture of the folk with the spiritual tune. It is one of the most haunting music that you will hear, as it generates from the bottom of people’s hearts. One of my professor’s, made us listen to African folk songs. I could not figure out the meaning of the words, but I could definitely feel the rhythm of the songs, and was tapping my feet to them. He related that folk songs are the songs of the earth, of the land that people have inhabited for generations. Therefore, folk music, be it African or Nepali, is the sound of the earth itself.
Generally speaking, you will find lots of varieties in the folk tunes of Nepal. The diversity of the inhabitants of this small country is mind boggling, so are the numbers of folk music that can depict Nepal. According to each ethnic and other population living in Nepal, there is sure to at least one, or several folk tunes per each population. You can hear several Newari folk tunes; if you are living in the valley or outside, where there is a majority Newari population. The combination of musical instruments that is popular among Newars is the “Dhime baja.†Similarly, there are the folk tunes of Eastern Nepal, mostly from the Rai population, including the “Dhaan Nach,†“Ubhauli and Udhauli.†You will also hear the “Sale jyu’ and “Maruni†beats in the Eastern part of Nepal. There are the jhyaure beats of the hilly region, which are the tunes of the Chettris and other ethnic groups. You will find the beats of the “rodhi gahr,†among the Gurungs, and the “Tamang selo†in the dwelling place of the Tamangs.
There are many other examples, of what tune I can call a Nepali folk music. No matter, which particular group is playing the music or singing, and dancing to it; folk music belong to all Nepali population.
What is there in the old that keeps us going back for more? No one has the definite answer; for most people old has the power to revive memories. For others, old is the past that cannot be forgotten, or that in which one can escape the present. This question applies to old Nepali movies. What makes people love the old nepali movie and talk about them endlessly? Most old films were made at a time, when films could not be in a digital format. They needed to be taken to Mumbai for the finishing touch, and the budget invested was low. Nonetheless, of the old Nepali movie list, people still remember Maitighar and Paral ko Aago of the pre-color era. There is a crowd that wants to watch movies, like Jeevan Rekha and Sindur,time and again.
Likewise, movies like, Samjhana and Kusume Rumal have a cult following among Nepali movie lovers. The actors in the movie are great in their roles, and the technicians have done as much with what little resources they had. Of the old Nepali movie list, some of my own favorites include Basudev, Prem Pinda, Behuli and Balidan, among others. What makes Nepali movie enthusiasts remember the time, when these movies were made?There are no definite answers to the question; however, it is for sure that I will watch Basudev and Balidan a hundred times, and not feel at the least bored. One of the things that make these films stand out is the storyline. The old Nepali films have a great storyline, or at least believable storyline. It also is the background scores and the play back singing that makes anyone love old Nepali movies. The songs are so simple, but beautiful and can be hummed anytime.
What can one say about the actors that were cast in the old Nepali movies? Actors in the old Nepali movies are implausible in their roles, and are so authentic. There are very few movies in the old Nepali movie lists that do not make it to the top of charts. It can be argued that the simplicity of the presentation had a Nepali feel to these movies, and that feel is lacking as of now. Even the best new Nepali movies borrow from Korean movies or Hindi movies, and that is a shame. It is not always nice to reminiscence about the past, but it is good to learn from it. It is understood that the New Nepali film makers need to watch old Nepali movies often, and understand what clicks well with the audience.
The more one learns, the more one understands and can make important changes to a product. The same is true of making of Nepali movies, or any other movies as to say.

He started his film career as a side dancer, and then a choreographer; he is one of the few actors, who are a good dancer as well. He is Dilip Rayamajhi, who shot to fame and recognition after playing the role of Adi Kabi Bhanubhakta, the first poet to write in Nepali language for the mass. His debut movie was Bhanubhakta, for which he received great praise and critical acclaim. After that he got to act in many movies, including Tulsi Ghimrie’s Darpan Chaya. One of the biggest hits of the entire Nepali film history, Dilip gained much popularity after the screening of the movie. He became the heart throb of the Nepali girls and women, alike.
Many school girls to working women, became his fan after watching this movie. His chemistry with Niruta Singh was commendable in the movie, and they were paired again in some movies, one of which is Lahana. The last scene of the movie, in which Niruta Singh dies and the two actors, in particular Dilip cries, had girls tearing up to see their favorite hero in pain.
However, the duo could not revive their chemistry with same enthusiasm, and the audience could not feel their on screen chemistry, either. It is a sad thing that a pair, with so much potential to become the next big pair of Nepali films could not work their magic, accordingly. It may partly be the fault of the directors who cast them; they could not manipulate them to produce the same effect as Darpan Chaya.
Nonetheless, Dilip has worked with Karishma Manandhar, who is probably five to six years older than him. His chemistry with her was well received too, especially in the movie, Jindagani. The song, “Tiomro tyo aankhama ko bascha…†from the same movie featuring Dilip and Karishma, became popular among music lovers. He related in an interview that he went to see Manandhar’s shooting when he was a school kid, and said that he was glad to be working with a senior artist.
Dilip has also worked in several music videos, whether pop music, or folk music. The latest of his music videos are to the songs, “Yani maya ho…†and a Teej song, “Markai deu kammara, bhachana na kammara, shaili…†His dancing has been praised by many people, and in many people’s opinion, his dancing is better than his acting. There is one thing about Rayamajhi that people have no problem with, and that is his openness about his family life. He talked about his wife in his interviews and still does, without revealing too much, but he also does not hide that he is married, which is not characteristic of many other actors.
The actress, who was the actress in the 1980s and the early 1990s, Tripti Nadakar is back to the Nepali film industry, after she left for India to take care of her family in the mid 1990s. It is the love of the Nepali viewers that has pulled her back to the industry, as she loves to say. The love of the audience is well evident, in the fact that she has been well received, after coming back to Nepali movies in the mid 2000s.
She started her Nepali film career with Samjhana, opposite Bhuwan K.C. in 1983. She paired with him in two other movies, Kusume Rumal and Saino. It is not a new thing to talk about their chemistry. Right from the first movie, the other two movies were received well by the audience, because of the pairs’ one screen romance and presence. In Samjhana, she had to play a double, as the lover/wife and the daughter of Bhuwan K.C.; Tripti has done justice to both the roles in the movie. In spite of her being an Indian, she won the hearts of her Nepali audience by portraying herself, as a young Nepali village belle in Samjhana.
Similarly, in Kusume Rumal, she could not be together with Bhuwan K.C., as his role required him to be a lone lover. The song, “Kusume Rumal…†from the movie does portray their unsaid and immaterialized love in this movie. Her next movie, Saino was also well received, and so was her movie with Shrawan Ghimire, Lahure. In the movie she plays a single unmarried mother of a Lahure(soldier), as her lover dies before being able to marry her. From a young, innocent girl to a woman of forty years old, Tripti has done justice to the roles. This movie, along with Koseli showcased her versatility as an actor to the Nepali audience. It is also good to mention that most of her films were made by Tulsi Ghimire, except for Samjhana.
After doing Koseli in 1992, she went back to India to settle down; after taking care of her family for years, she was back in Nepali film with Aamko Kakh in 2004. She has done a few movies after that, and she even won the award of the best supporting actor female for Aamako Kakh, in the National Film awards 2067. An interesting thing about Tripti is that she was paired with Bhuwn K.C. in her earlier movies, and nowadays she is being paired with another Superstar actor, Rajesh Hamal. She is no longer the lead actress of the Nepali movies, as many young actresses have arrived in the scene, but the Nepali audience is glad that she has returned to her second home.
It would be a crime to separate the two, not only in person, but even when mentioning about them. They are made for each other; they were born to act together, whether in movies, or in their favorite genre of TV serials. Who else would I be talking about, than the MAHA jodi. Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya are the biggest actors in the field of, mainly comedy. Even after decades of their working together in hundreds of TV serials, stand up comedy, movies and stage shows, they have not found a successor to their fame and name in the comedy genre. This is good for them and better for their audience, who absolutely adore their pair.
Even though I do not want to commit a crime by separating them, for a little background it would be inevitable to write about them individually. Madan Krishna is the older brother, among the two; he was born in 1950 and is nine years older than Hari Bansha. He started playing in street dramas and had done some other acting, before meeting up with Hari Bansha Acharya. Acharya had performed in Radio Nepal and in the Gaijatra Mahotsav before getting together with Madan Krishna.
Though the two had worked independent of each other for some years, it was only with the two working together that they gained, the popularity and acclaim as of now. People cannot even remember a time, when they had seen them separately. The movies that the two have acted together in are: Lovi Paapi, Filim, Basudev, Tan Ta Sarai Bigrish Ni Badri, Je Bho Ramrai Bho and Balidan.
The two have done comedy acts in other movies, while Filim and Balidan saw them in serious role. Especially in Balidan, Hari Bahnsas Acharya proved his variety and scope as an actor, who can not only do comedy, but make people tear up as well.
The two are better known for their acting in TV serials, as mentioned earlier. They have done more than thirty serials till date, the latest being Pathsaala, which is being aired on Nepal Television, every Tuesday night. Some of tehri most famous TV serials are: 50-50, Lal Purja, Laxmi, Ban Pale, Raat, Kantipur, Pandhra Gate, Madan Bahadur Hari Bahadur, Sur Besur, Dashain and Aama. In most of these serials, Hari Bansha has played the negative role, except for Lal Purja and Dashain, in which Madan Krishna has played the unpopular role, especially in Lal Purja, which is a role to remember for a lifetime. There is not much to say about the versatility of Hari Bansha; he has been the perfect innocent guy in Lal Purja, while he has played a true sadist in Laxmi and Madan Bahadur Hari Bahadur. I hope that the two have many more roles to play for the Nepali audience, at home and abroad.
She is one of the actresses, who took the movie industry by surprise with her acting, grace and dance skills. Born in Darjeeling, India, Niruta Singh was introduced to the world of Nepali movies by the veteran director, editor, lyricist, screen writer and cameraman, Tulsi Ghimire. Ghimire, who himself is from Kalimpong, India has made huge contribution to make Nepali movies popular among people, who were used to watching Hindi movies.
Niruta debuted in Ghimire’s Dakshina(1993), in which she was paired with Bhuwan K.C. She is one other actress, who was paired opposite Bhuwan K.C. in her first film, the other two actresses paired opposite him, in their first film are: Karishma Manandhar and Tripti Nadakar. The song of the movie Dakshina, “Sapana bhayi aankhama aaune ko hola…,†made her a popular face to remember. After her successful debut, she moved on to become, one of the most popular actresses in the history of Nepali movies. Many movies in the mid 1990, late 90s and early 200s were made with Niruta, as the leading lady.
Some of her movies that were released in the 1990s are: Afanta,Rahar, Nata Ragatko and Thuldai. All these three movies fared well in the box office, which increased her popularity, as an actress who could make a film sell well. Of these three movies, she played the role of a widowed woman in Thuldai, in which the title role was played by Shiva Shrestha. Likewise, in Afanta, she played the role of a rape victim, and was praised for her incredible acting. Moving into the 2000s, her luck was even stronger; she played in movies, like Aago, Afno Ghar Afno Manche, Siundo Ko Sindoor, Darpan Chaya, Dui Kinara, Lahana, and others. Among these movies, Aago was banned by the censor board, for being a pro-Maoist movie.
Similarly, in regards to other movies, Darpan Chaya, became the biggest hit of the year 2001. The movie was directed by Tulsi Ghimire, and actor duo, Dilip Rayamajhi and Uttam Pradhan were paired opposite Niruta. The movie has a cult following till date; many people remember its songs, the friendship between the two actors and the love triangle. It is probably the most loved of Niruta’s films, in which her chemistry with Dilip Rayamajhi was much talked about. Some of her other pairs that is appreciated is Rajesh Hamal, Sri Krishna Shrestha and Bhuwan K.C. Niruta is lucky for being so successful in Nepali movies, as the viewers have adored her, despite her being a non-Nepali by birth. She also appreciates this fact, and has said in many interviews that she is indebted to the Nepali viewers, for loving her so much.
She has been known as the most popular film actress of Nepali films; she was the reigning queen of Nepali movies for more than fifteen years of her career. I am talking about no one else, but Karishma Manandhar, formerly Karishma K.C. She started her film career with Santaan (1985), opposite Bhuwan K.C., when she was just fourteen years old. At that tender age, with her acting, dance and physical beauty she won over the viewers’ heart. She went on to become a familiar name in Nepali movies, and there was a time, when hardly any movies were made without her.
It had been quite sometime that she had been away from Nepali movies, when she came back on the scene with Bashma Chaina Yo Mann. The reason for her disappearance from, first, the Nepali movies and then Nepal, is thought to be the failure of her much anticipated movie, Babu Saheb. The movie was not only Karishma’s acting venture, but also one of her first movies as a producer. This movie was released in 2002, and could not perform well in the market; despite Karishma’s denial that the movie was the only reason for her moving away to the USA, many film critics and people close to her, bank on the very reason.
It is a cause of much joy for the movie lovers and her fans that she is once again back in Nepal, and has been doing some movies lately. She is also seen in many premiere shows of movies, and recently inaugurated the fashion boutique of Former Miss Nepal, Usha Khadgi. She was also photographed in a stunning polka dot, black gown in the Nepal Fashion Week, here in the Capital.

Most people know Namrata Shrestha as a model; she started her career in the glamour field, by posing as a ramp and video model. She steeped into modeling in 1997, and eleven years later she was featured in a Nepali movie, Sano Sansar directed by Alok Nembang. It is not a coincidence that Nembang had worked with Namrata, in some music videos, before his decision to cast her in his directorial debut. Her open minded attitude has led her to difficult situations, including not getting along with some of her co-actors. She has also been criticized for over exposure in films, and has not gained praise for her acting skills. Nonetheless, with her dedication and attractive personality, she has been able to please most of her fans, and surely will continue to do so.

He has a Masters degree in English Literature from the Punjab University, India. This adds to the conception that he is an extraordinary actor, with good knowledge of the world.
Rajesh Hamal was born on June 9, 1964 in Tansen, Nepal. He studied at St. Xavier’s School till the eighth grade. He partly went to college in Moscow and finished his M.A. in English from Punjab University, India. Even though he has Masters in English, he hardly or reclines from talking in English preferring his native tongue Nepali, during his interviews. His first movie was “Yug Dekhi Yug Samma†in 1990, a film made by his uncle. Till date he has worked in over 177 Nepali films and one Pakistani movie.
The movie “Deuta†in the year 1994 was Hamal’s ticket to super stardom. Since then he has never looked back.Hamal started his film career with Deepak Rayamajhi’s Yug Dekhi Yug Samma in 1994. His pair in the movie was Kristi Mainali, with whom he has worked in many films. Similarly, in the later years his pairing with Karishma Manandhar and Niruta Singh has received great response from the audience. Allare, Basanti and Saathi with Karishma Manandhar were great hits for Hamal, and Siundo ko Sindoor and Kartavya are his films with Niruta Singh.
It is essential to mention that Hamal has been a favorite of movie makers, ever since he started his career. There are a very few films without him in the movie, somewhere and sometime, even if it is just a cameo. He is sellable, which is one of the reasons, why film directors and producers want him in a movie. However, it has been sixteen years of film history for Hamal, and he is still going strong. Some of his new ventures are Dus Gaja and Dharma; there has been a surge of new actors in Nepali films, but Hamal is still the biggest Superstar. Not only am I saying this, but you can read his interviews and see him on television quite often, which proves his persona and charm. Born in 1964, the actor is nearly fifty years old, but when he is on the screen, all eyes are on him.
Rajesh Hamal is always asked about his marriage plans and as a smooth talker as he is he always answers that he doesn’t feel that he is in a marriageable age. He feels quite comfortable being single, he says and well, we believe him. He may be ageing but with the charm he has, he is doing a lot of girls a favour by staying single. However, a big part of him being single can be his long past relation. He fell in love when he was 17 with a 22 years old Indian girl. The serious relation lasted for three years. Later, her parents married her off to someone else. And the gentleman he is, he still doesn’t mention his ex-girlfriend as he thinks that he would be shaming her by reminiscing about their past affair. He sure is a man in true words.

He is planning to get into the movie-making business in dual roles as director and Actor. After all the love and knowledge he has gained from the fraternity, it is his duty to give something back as well. We hope that he proves to be as much good a director as he has been an actor. It is for sure that many will be waiting eagerly for his movie as a debutant director.
